Nobody Knows Your Business Better Than You

A lot of us feel like we’re at work 24/7. If you’re a business owner you might spend more time at your restaurant or shop than you do at home, especially in the summertime. This can make advertising difficult because the day-to-day stuff becomes so familiar it’s easy to forget that you should be promoting it. But there’s a new wave of people to welcome each week and business owners have to remember that those folks don’t know anything about your products, services, or special offers.

The beautiful view off your back deck, your lunch specials, the 10% discount you offer on Wednesdays before 10am, your exclusive 2016 OBX t-shirts – these are things that can be constantly circulated across all of your social media platforms. It’s important to remember that customers aren’t intuitive and will be checking Facebook and your website during their visit and will often make impulse decisions about where to spend their money while they’re here on vacation.

The demographic that sees the most growth is people between the ages 45-54, and this is great news for business owners because those are generally the folks who are making family decisions and have the money to spend on eating out and purchasing souvenirs, wild horse tours, and parasailing sessions. When polled, 47% of adults said that Facebook influenced their decision when it came to spending money and 71% of adults who are “online” have a Facebook account. As a result, 80% of marketers polled say that a strong Facebook presence has increased business.

So how can we help your promote your product? Well, it’s not rocket science, but it does take some commitment. At the beginning of each week, make a list of your specials, sales, promotions, events, or anything else you think consumers may be interested in. Don’t take anything for granted! We recently posted a silly picture of Lanie wearing grass flip flops she got from Kitty Hawk Kites and it was shared 48 times with a reach of over 7k people! And even though we didn’t link back to the My Outer Banks Home website in the post, our web traffic increased that day too.

Don’t expect anyone to generate content for you. While an ad agency could certainly write a generic post about visiting your business because you offer a great service, product, or food, no one really knows your business like you! You’re the one who hears informal customer testimonials, who is familiar with all of the small details of your product, and who can supply the consumer with a true “insider” reason for why they should come and spend their money with you. Consumers also appreciate being able to communicate directly with business owners in a genuine way. The secret to successful social media is conversation!
